Genre: Indie Pop
I recently stumbled across Halsey on YouTube where she released a number of her songs on her channel. I was very pleasantly surprised. Halsey’s vocals are edgy enough to shift her out of the mainstream pop genre. Not only does her voice stand out but the lyrics of her songs are deep and sincere. Indie Pop fans will surely love her.
Halsey makes use of great lyrics and that is one of the best things about this album. In the song “Colours” (rumoured to be written about fellow Indie Pop Star, Matt Healy of The 1975) she writes lyrics that are beautiful in its description. “You’re dripping like a saturated sunrise” is one of those lyrics. Besides the lyrics her vocals are clear and beautiful. “Roman Holiday” will make you want to grab your friends and go on a road trip while blasting that song. Make no mistake this album is not rainbows and sunshine as Halsey covers some deep topics such as drugs and difficult relationships. You will also see Halsey’s hard, more badass side with “Castle” and “Haunting” shows a dark side of Halsey. Musically this album is what you can expect from an Indie Pop artist as it is not as bubbly and overproduced as mainstream pop and holds a bit of darkness to it. Overall I would definitely recommend this album to any Indie Pop music lover. Mainstream Pop lovers may find some songs to love as well.
Must-Listen’s: Roman Holiday, Colours, Ghost
