Genre: Dance-Pop, R&B

Justin Bieber’s highly anticipated fourth studio album was met with great success. It surpassed One Direction’s Made in the A.M and claimed the No.1 spot in well all the charts. So is Bieber’s comeback album really worth all that success?

A simple answer: Yes it is.

Bieber has managed to encompass a variety of different genres in his album, ensuring that everyone will love at least one of the songs on his album. Firstly this album has a whopping 18 tracks on the standard edition and 20 tracks on the deluxe edition. The cover alone indicates that this album is different to the previous albums he has done.

The album opens with “Mark My Words” a sweet ballad written with Selena Gomez in mind. This sets the new mature tone of Justin’s music with beautiful falsettos and meaningful lyrics. “I’ll Show You” is one of the more honest songs on the album. “Don’t forget that I’m human, don’t forget that I’m real” Justin sings revealing his struggles with his life in the spotlight. The tempo of the album starts changing with the popular “What Do You Mean” and then goes into the upbeat “Sorry”

Skrillex features on a number of tracks from this album. The result is songs that you can’t help but move your feet to. “Children” is a song with an inspiring message and a beat that EDM fans will love. Justin’s slight EDM crossover first began with the Skrillex, Diplo and Bieber collaboration “Where Are ü Now” which also features on Purpose. Skrillex also produced the track “The Feeling” featuring pop-indie star Halsey. This song is one of the more Pop sounding songs on the album but with a great beat thanks to Skrillex.

Purpose has a few other collaborations with the likes of Big Sean, Travis Scott and Nas which will appeal to fans of rap and R&B. “Love Yourself” is co-written by Ed Sheeran with harsh lyrics such as “My mama don’t like you and she likes everyone” makes one wonder who this song is about. It is also one of the simpler songs with just an electric guitar and Ed’s backing vocals.

“Purpose” is one of the most personal songs on the album with only Bieber’s vocals and a piano. It also features Justin giving fans an inspirational message at the end of the song.

Purpose is definitely Justin Bieber’s best album to date. His vocals have improved and he has managed to prove that he is more than a tween pop sensation but rather a very talented artist. This album is sure to please all of his “Beliebers” and will definitely win him fans from the older crowd.
