Genre: Pop
About 4 years have passed since, Pure Heroine, Lorde’s grammy-winning debut album was released. Fans have been eagerly awaiting Lorde’s return with sophmore album, Melodrama. Lorde’s popularity stemmed from her ability to write songs that her fans can really relate to.
While Pure Heroine encompassed teenage angst and love, this album shows off a slightly more mature Lorde. No longer a somber teenager but rather a fully fledged adult who has gone through heartbreak and happiness.
Melodrama is pop music at its best. Lorde includes upbeat, catchy songs such as “sober” and “Perfect Places” but also brings down the tempo with “Liability” and “Writer in the dark”. Although, songs like “sober” is upbeat and has a more fun sound the lyrics are still serious and deep. The brilliance of Lorde’s writing in the first album is that she uses a lot of metaphors allowing the listeners to take their own meanings out of her songs. Melodrama is no different.
Vocally Lorde does a great job of delivering a clear, beautiful low register with very little production. It almost feels as though Lorde is having an intimate conversation with you while you are listening to Melodrama. Her voice has amazing clarity and is so distinct. There does not seem to be much change in her vocal performance from her previous album but in her case this is not a bad thing at all.
“Liability” is the most personal song on the album. Just Lorde’voice and a piano. She laments about her loneliness and that she is often too much for people.
“The truth is I am a toy that people enjoy ‘Til all of the tricks don’t work anymore And then they are bored of me” – Liability
While this album has pop sounds and is radio-friendly, it is not an album one would play at a party or social gathering. Melodrama is best enjoyed when really listening to the lyrics, that is when you can really appreciate and relate to Lorde’s brilliance.
