Genre: Alternative R&B
Beauty Behind The Madness is the Weeknd’s second studio album. With two successful singles, “The Hills” and “Can’t Feel My Face”, there was high expectations for this album and it does not disappoint. The Weeknd’s vocals are smooth and soulful. The lyrics are raw and honest.
The album opens with “Real Life” and sets the tone for the rest of the album. In this song The Weeknd is honest with listeners and the lyrics grab your attention. The Weeknd sings “Don’t waste precious tears on me, I’m not worth the misery.” This honesty is expressed throughout the album.
Many fans of The Weeknd have expressed their fear that he is becoming “mainstream”. In my opinion The Weeknd has found a great blend between connecting with new fans but still keeping those who have been with him in the beginning. Older fans should enjoy songs such as “Acquainted” and “Often”. The Weeknd does extend his fanbase by having the likes of Lana Del Ray and Ed Sheeran featured on the album. The result is two beautifully written and sung songs. The colloboration between Ed Sheeran and The Weeknd is fantastic once again showing The Weeknd’s use of honest and deep lyrics. This album also has some great bass drops such as the one in “The Hills”. Listen to it with good speakers or earphones to get the full effect. There are one or two songs that I am not completely sold on and I do find some songs are a bit long but other than that it is a great album.
This album is sure to satisfy both new and old fans of The Weeknd. If you enjoy R&B music then this album is definitely worth a listen. Fans of artists such as Frank Ocean and Drake should give it a try as well.
Must-Listen’s: Prisoner (Feat. Lana Del Ray), Dark Times (Feat. Ed Sheeran), Acquainted
