UK Indie band, Bastille delivered an incredible performance filled with passion, sensational visuals and a live performance almost identical to the studio albums.
After a decent performance by Opposite the Other, and a more noteworthy performance by Matthew Mole, Bastille took the stage of the Grandwest Arena. With the band's introduction being a spoof of a news report it was clear that this concert was going to be about more than just singing a few songs. Bastille was there to deliver a message.
Bastille's songs tackle current issues in today's society which all listeners can relate to. The messages of the songs were not lost during the concert as a combination of lightening and visuals, in the form of videos played on the screen, were used to set the tone. However, without prior knowledge of the songs' meanings the point may have been missed by some.
Dan, the lead singer of the band, did a fantastic job of leading the crowd and bringing an energy to what could have been a slightly depressing performance. The band used the entire stage with even the drummer coming forward to interact with the crowd. Dan went as far as to sing "Flaws" within the golden circle crowd allowing fans to feel apart of the performance. A hauntingly beautiful performance of the acoustic song, "Two Evils", was sung on the balcony of the arena giving even the seated tickets a brilliant view of the band.
The setlist consisted of a mix of songs from the new album, Wild World, and the old favorites from their debut album. They also mixed the more somber songs with the upbeat ones creating a great flow to the concert. All the songs were delivered with immense passion. "Overjoyed" and "Oblivion" even brought tears to the eyes of some fans.
Bastille delivered a near perfect live performance. It was more than a concert, it was art and any indie music fan would appreciate it. Here's hoping they visit Cape Town shores for a third time.
